This festival is celebrated for three days in the courtyard of the Mustang Durbar. All three days, monks perform cultural shows and dances in their traditional dance. The festival is observed with respect to Dorje Sonam who chased his own demon father away from the Mustang Kingdom to save people.

1st Day of Mustang Tiji Festival Photography Trek

On the first day, the Monks of Chode Gompa perform Tsa Chham. This performance reflects the harassment of the demon Ma Tam Ru Ta. In the Buddhist tradition, the monks who perform this dance obtain Vajrakali’s empowerment.

2nd Day of Mustang Tiji Festival Photography Trek

The dance performed by the monks on the second day of the Tiji Festival is called Nga Chham. This dance shows the rebirth of Dorje Sonam. Demon's father watches the performance hiding under a blanket in the middle of the Lo Manthang Durbar Square. The performers show terrifying manifestations to signify the soul the infant meets during rebirth through the Bardo (transition between one’s death and before rebirth).

3rd Day of Mustang Tiji Festival Photography Trek

The dance performed on the third day is called Rha Chham. The performance signifies the victory of Dorje Sonam over the demon and dispelling him from Mustang forever. Now,  peace and prosperity are restored in the desert land of Mustang Kingdom.
